Online casinos under Ontario rules

Ontario runs a regulated online gambling market, with a public list of the sites allowed to operate in it. This page explains how it works for readers around Lake Simcoe, and how this guide's paid links work.

The regulated market

Ontario's regulated online gambling market opened on April 4, 2022. iGaming Ontario conducts and manages the online gambling offered by private operators, and the AGCO regulates it. The rule for a private online casino is short. It is legal in Ontario only with AGCO registration and an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.

Not every online casino in the province is private. OLG.ca is Ontario's government-run online casino, separate from the private operators. Someone who knows the slot floor beside the Georgian Downs track will find online play runs under different rules. A site's legal status depends on registration, not on how familiar its games look.

Checking a site

The official list of regulated online gambling sites is the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. A site missing from that list is not one of Ontario's regulated sites. Online play is 19+, and it is allowed only while the player is physically in Ontario.

BetGuard, at betguard.ca, is run by iGaming Ontario. It lets a person 19 or older exclude themselves from every regulated Ontario online gambling site at once, OLG.ca included. It does not cover land-based casinos such as the one at Georgian Downs. For those, My PlayBreak is OLG's self-exclusion program, and a casino break bars entry to every Ontario casino.

How this guide is paid

Paid links appear only on this guide's home page, and each one is marked Ad. There are three: one in the menu, one under the first screen and one near the end. They lead to a private online casino partner that is not named here and can change.

The guide earns a commission from those links and offers no assurance about the partner. Before using any online casino, readers should check it against the official Ontario directory of regulated sites described above. The partner has no connection with the venue at 7485 5th Side Road. Links to the venue, the track, the province and help services are never paid.

Questions at the rail

Q1How can someone tell if an online casino is legal in Ontario?

Check the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca, the official list of regulated online gambling sites.

Q2Can someone play on an Ontario site from outside the province?

Not under Ontario rules. Online play is allowed only while the player is physically in Ontario, and only for people 19 or older.

Q3Does BetGuard cover the casino in Innisfil?

No, BetGuard does not cover the casino at 7485 5th Side Road. It covers every regulated Ontario online gambling site at once, but not land-based casinos. Land-based casinos fall under My PlayBreak, OLG's self-exclusion program. A casino break lasts 3 or 6 months, or 1 to 5 years, and cannot be cancelled early. To enrol, call the OLG Support Centre at 1-800-387-0098 or ask staff at a casino.
